“hinten Links” — rear left, the position of a wheel on a car — takes an ordinary tyre and strips it of its function. Lisa Holzapfel (*1999, Germany) flattens the object almost to two dimensions, stretching it until it stops being a tyre you’d mount and drive on and becomes pure structure: tread, pattern, the geometry usually hidden in plain sight. Holzapfel studied Freie Kunst at the Akademie der bildenden Künste München, and the move here is a sculptor’s instinct applied in reverse — not adding volume but draining it, so what’s left is the thing’s surface logic laid bare. Robbed of its essential purpose, the tyre finally becomes visible.
