Nine handmade tiles, painted in the traditional faience technique, make up Rosanna Staus’s “Jungfer im Grünen” — a depiction of the flower of the same name, known in English as love-in-a-mist or devil-in-a-bush. Staus (*1994, Germany) studied Illustration and Design (B.A.) and Printmaking and Book Illustration (M.A.) at HAW Hamburg, alongside Drawing at the HFBK Hamburg, and that grounding in printmaking and the handmade is right there in the work: faience is an unforgiving, centuries-old method, and committing it to nine separate tiles is a real act of patience. The plant’s double name does a quiet bit of work too — the same modest bloom is both maiden and devil, depending on who’s looking.
Recently exhibited at Contemporary Art and Design Fair, Zeughausmesse Berlin.
