Maxim Brandt (*1986, Germany) studied Painting at the Muthesius Art Academy. “black cat at black night” makes a cheerful liar of its own title: the black cat arrives in vibrant greens, pinks and browns, and the black night glows turquoise and blue. Nothing here is the colour it’s named, and that’s the joke and the pleasure of it — Brandt takes the most ordinary unlucky-omen image there is and paints it in defiance of every word in the title, so the darkness ends up luminous and the bad-luck cat turns into a riot of colour. Exhibited recently in a group show at This Weekend Room, South Korea.
